I wouldn't consider this a 'long' shounen as a lot of shounens are easily longer. It's one of the better ones, though. For the most part, things are consistent (unlike a ton of other shounen) and he put in a very well thought out power system that left a lot of room for adaptation and covered numerous bases. The battle system is probably the best one out of all the major shounens to me. At the very least, it has the least unexplainable loopholes and instantaneous power ups all while having the most variety.Characters have been a bit of a let down for me.

Its got some very typical shounen heros but the pairing of what was initially a very anti-heroish character (Killua) and Gon (a very naive and innocent hero) was interesting. Their interactions and their development was interesting because of their differences.
As for the support characters. I thought it was a bit lacking because they come and go without much rhythm but whatever. The art. It ranges from good to bad but it's a clear level below a lot of other works. The main reason is because Togashi doesn't work with a studio. It's just him and his wife. Still, the quality has picked up lately and he has corrected some of his copy/pasting and scribbling ways.
Inconsistent but with a low peak would probably be the best way to describe it as of now.And the story has been up and down again. This is largely due to the very clearly separated arcs. This really shouldn't be something new to shounen readers so I don't really consider it a negative. It's just something that comes with the territory. As for the individual arcs, I've enjoyed some more than others and in talks with other readers, I've found that it's really an issue with preferences.Overall, it's good but hasn't done anything to be considered great in my book.

Even though Togashi uses cliches, he manages to be original and to surprise you. The first 18 volumes are awesome, but volumes 19+ are kinda disappointing.

I didn't like it at 1st but the anime changed my mind, which lead to me reading the manga. Now it is one of my elite above all series, I thought it so good it deserved with 4 other series to join my manga pantheon lol. Togashi did a marvellous job with Yu Yu Hakusho but imo he has excelled himself with HxH.
Very interesting characters, good story arcs, and the usual dependable shonen themes. Beware if you are going to become an HxH fan crazecat you need to stay loyal to the series, because it is well known for being on hiatus.
Interestingly for a shonen it doesn't necessarily work on the lines of 'I have more raw power than you therefore I win'. In HxH it is more the case of how the powers are used, you can be weaker than your opponent yet you might win because of a special skill you have for example. The battle system in HxH is the most intersting I have encountered in shonen, and most of the manga I have read is shonen. The characters are great imo, but there are 3 who make the series a must read: Chairman Netaro, Hisoka and Kuroro Lucifer. One of my favorite too. Except for the art, which can be awfull sometimes. But the story is really interesting and there is not too much of these long fighting scenes which makes me bored.
Don't get me wrong, I love the fights, but when they're is almost only that, as in Bleach I tend to stop reading. Here the background and characters developpement makes it different.I really like the whole concept of hunters a lot. If you have troubles with the shabby art, watch the anime. I rewarched it the other time and realised it really excellent. The artwork tends to be better btw from the scans from the serialised volumes rather than the scans from the shonen jumps. I love how HxH explains what is going on and the consequences of fighting in certain ways mid-battle.I guess I mention Hisoka again lol. Hisoka is one of the most captivating characters I have ever encountered, he has an attraction about him I can't explain very well.
He has a mentality similar to Bleach's Kenpachi, he deosn't give a damn if he fights a good or bad guy, so long as he is enjoying a good fight. We know he is powerful but his full capabilities are merely hinted. I like the air of mystery. I was about to start a new thread but managed to find this one since it discusses what I was about to state.Hunter x Hunter is one of the most overrated manga on MAL.
The artwork is average and the story is nothing but the typical standard Shounen fanfare. In fact, I would like to go as far as to say that it's simply another descendant of Dragon Ball. If you substitute Goku with Hunter x Hunter's main character, then you will get the same type of journeys and characters he meets along the way. Here's the scenario:Boy with father, who has achieved possibly the highest level of a certain type of skill, pursues the same profession as father and goes along the way with a weird sense of maturity despite being 12 years old. There is a lot of unnecessary violence with no counter balance of a character questioning the amount of violence other than accepting it and moving on.The artwork gets worse than the first volume at times. You start wondering whether the mangaka is simply getting bored and just sketching just for the sake of getting money from the franchise.Recommendation:This is not even close to being a GOOD shounen manga. It's just average.
If you have the time to follow the 20+ volume manga series, then go ahead. However, I suggest that people read better shounen manga that share similar themes, such as Yu Yu Hakusho, One Piece, Gintama, Naruto, Bleach and other well drawn manga.5/10 (Average)Fun fact: Yu Yu Hakusho was written by Yoshihiro Togashi, the same mangaka behind Hunter x Hunter.
